Almost 300 people attended Sizewell C’s latest jobs fair in Lowestoft, with at least two attendees securing interviews for apprenticeship roles.
Held on Tuesday at Inspire, Colville House, the event brought together Sizewell C and around 25 supply chain partners to showcase the thousands of jobs and training opportunities the project will create.
Attendees had the chance to meet industry experts, learn about current and future vacancies, and discover how they could play a role in one of the UK’s largest clean energy projects, currently under construction on the Suffolk coast.
Michele Dawson, Office Manager at Sizewell C contractor H W Martin, said: “The jobs fair was incredibly successful. We met some outstanding new talent, and we’ll be interviewing two of the candidates later this week for civil engineering apprenticeships. These roles offer the opportunity to study at university while gaining hands-on experience working on site.
“We also took the contact details of many other attendees, who we’ll be in touch with when future opportunities become available. We’ve done this at previous careers fairs, and it’s led to many jobs.”
Opportunities at Sizewell C span a wide range of sectors, including construction, engineering, environmental services, logistics and business support.
Jobseekers welcomed the breadth of roles and training opportunities on offer.
Damien, from Lowestoft, said: “I currently work nightshifts, but I want a better work-life balance, so I thought I’d come along to see what jobs are on offer for a mid-life career change. It’s great to see so many opportunities available. Sizewell C is going to be a big deal for Suffolk, and I’d love to be a part of it.”
David, from Beccles, added: “I came to the careers fair to ask questions, find out more about the project, and hopefully one day secure an apprenticeship in IT. I’m just about to start sixth form in computer science, and Sizewell C is a very big project locally, so I was keen to know what opportunities will be available to me in future.”
At peak construction, around a third of Sizewell C’s 7,900-strong workforce, approximately 2,600 people, will come from East Anglia.
As part of an agreement with Lowestoft MP Jess Asato, at least 500 jobs will go to people from Lowestoft.
Stuart Allsopp, Jobs Service Lead at Sizewell C, said: “To welcome almost 300 people to our latest jobs fair during the summer months was incredibly encouraging. It shows just how keen local people are to learn more about the opportunities available through our project. Contractors told me they had some excellent conversations with potential candidates, and knowing that at least two people have already been offered interviews is a fantastic result for everyone involved.”
During construction, Sizewell C will create at least 1,500 apprenticeships, with at least a third earmarked for people in Suffolk.
Last year, Sizewell C hosted careers fairs in Leiston, Lowestoft and Ipswich, attracting more than 1,500 attendees. A similar programme of events is being delivered this year.
